Combining multiple recordings
Record several takes into one project, or join recordings you already made into a single video.
Long walkthroughs are easier to record in pieces. A feature tour, an onboarding video, a bug report with three steps — you record each part separately, then put them together.
There are two situations, and they're handled differently. Pick the one that matches where you are.
The + button
Both routes go through the same control: the + button at the left end of the timeline, labelled Add new content.
| Item | Adds |
|---|---|
| Screen | Another recording, captured now |
| Video | A video file you already have — MP4, MOV, M4V |
| Photo | A still image — JPG, PNG, WebP |
| Webcam | A camera recording |
Above the list is a toggle: At end or At start. That's where the new piece lands on the timeline. It defaults to the end, which is what you want most of the time.
Situation A — you're still recording
Best case. Do this if you haven't started yet.
Record your first take, then instead of finishing and starting over, stay in the project and add the next take to it:
- In the editor, click + → Screen.
- Screenify asks to confirm, then hides the editor and brings back the recording HUD.
- It remembers what you captured last time — same window, same area, same display — so you just press record.
- Stop with Esc. The new take is appended to the end of your timeline.
Repeat for as many takes as you need.
Why this is the better route: everything stays in one project from the beginning. Your zoom moves, captions, music and background are applied once, across the whole thing. Nothing has to be re-done or re-exported.
Situation B — you already have several separate projects
This is the common case when you didn't plan ahead: nine recordings, nine projects, and now they need to be one video.
Work through it in this order:
Step 1 — Trim inside each project
Open each project and cut it down to just the part you want to keep — dead air at the start, the fumbled sentence in the middle, the pause before you stopped.
Do this now, inside each project, not later. It's the step people skip, and it's the one that saves you the most time.
Step 2 — Export each one to MP4
Export each trimmed project as a normal MP4. Put them all in one folder and name them in the order they'll appear — 01-intro.mp4, 02-setup.mp4, and so on. You'll thank yourself in the next step.
Step 3 — Bring them together
Open the project you want first in the finished video. Then, for each remaining file in order:
+ → Video → pick the file.
Each one lands at the end of the timeline, in the order you add them.
Step 4 — Finish once
Now add the things that belong to the whole video rather than to any one piece: captions, music, a title, the background. Export once.
The clips you imported in step 3 are already trimmed — you did that in step 1. Leave them whole. If you find yourself wanting to cut an imported clip, it's usually a sign that step 1 was skipped for that piece; it's cleaner to go back to that project, re-trim, re-export, and swap the file.
Things worth knowing
Recordings of the same size join seamlessly. Takes captured from the same window or the same display sit on the timeline as one continuous piece. A recording of a different size — a phone screen next to a desktop capture, say — comes in as its own clip, which is fine; it just keeps its own dimensions.
Cursor effects apply to what Screenify recorded. Cursor highlighting, click rings and click sounds come from movement data captured during recording. A video file you imported doesn't carry that data, so those effects don't apply to it. Everything else — background, mockups, zoom, captions, music — works the same on every clip.
Order is set by when you add, not by filename. Screenify appends each piece to the end. Add them in the order you want them to play. If you get one out of order, drag it along the timeline.
Where to go next
- Trimming and rearranging clips → Timeline
- One background and mockup for the whole video → Mockups
- Narration across the finished cut → Voiceover and captions
