Voiceover, music and captions
Three ways to add narration, background music with ducking, and subtitles.
Voiceover — three ways
Narration lives on the Voiceover track, and there are three ways to get it there. They produce the same kind of segment, so you can mix them in one project.
Add from the timeline + button, or right-click the Voiceover track.
Import
+ → Import voiceover, pick an audio file. Use this when narration was recorded elsewhere.
Record
+ → Record voiceover opens a small floating recorder over the preview.
It works in takes: a countdown, then recording, then a review step where you can replay, discard, retake or keep. While recording, a red outline grows along the track so you can see where you are.
Turn the countdown off for rapid mode — seek, hit record, speak, stop, keep — which is how you narrate a long video in short pieces.
The recorder mutes the project while you talk so the mic doesn't pick up your own video, and it anchors audio to the timeline by wall clock, so the take stays in sync even if the editor stutters.
AI voice
+ → AI voiceover opens a composer: type or paste a script, pick a voice, generate.
- A library of voices across 9 languages, filterable and previewable
- Three speaking paces
- Subtitles from the script — no transcription needed, the text is already known
- Generation runs in the background; you keep editing while it works
Everything runs on your Mac. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Shaping the delivery
Punctuation is how you control rhythm: , and . pause, ? rises, ! adds energy, … trails off, — is a beat.
Two more:
- A blank line between paragraphs becomes a natural breath.
[pause:2s]inserts an exact silence. There's an Insert pause button in the composer.
Your own voice
You can clone your own voice from a short sample: Create your voice, three steps, and it becomes a normal entry in the voice list. English only. The model downloads once and the voice stays on your Mac.
Music
The Music Track, with a library built in.
Browse Online Music opens the library — genres, moods, favourites, sorting by newest or length. Star a track to keep it in favourites. Recent Imports holds your own files.
| Control | Does |
|---|---|
| Default Volume | Level |
| Fade In / Fade Out | Ramps at each end |
| Auto Duck | Drops the music when narration plays |
| Duck Amount | How far it drops |
Turn Auto Duck on whenever there's a voiceover. Music at a constant level under speech is the most common reason a demo is hard to listen to.
You can also drag an audio file straight from Finder onto the timeline. Drop it on a track and it goes there; drop it anywhere else and it becomes music — with a Move to Voiceover button on the confirmation if that's not what you wanted.
Captions
The Caption Track.
Two sources:
- Transcribe the audio. Runs on your Mac; the model downloads on first use.
- From an AI voiceover script — the words are already known, so no transcription step.
You can also Import SRT, and Export SRT to publish subtitles alongside the video.
| Control | Does |
|---|---|
| Font Size | |
| Text Color / Highlight Color | The highlight marks the word being spoken |
| Background / Background Opacity | The plate behind the text |
| Fade Duration | Fade in and out |
| Linger Duration | How long a line stays after it's spoken |
Captions are anchored to the timeline, so trimming the video moves them with it.
