Getting Started

Record your screen and export a finished video in about two minutes.

This walks through one complete round trip: open Screenify, record something, and export it. Everything else in these docs builds on these five steps.

1. Start a recording

Open Screenify. The welcome screen asks Ready to capture? — click Start Recording.

A small floating bar (the recording HUD) appears near the bottom of your screen. This bar stays out of your recording; it never shows up in the finished video.

Want two or three app windows side by side in one video? Use the Record multiple windows button next to Start Recording and pick a layout first. See Multi-window recording.

2. Choose what to capture

The HUD offers four sources:

SourceCaptures
FullscreenYour whole display
WindowOne app window — it keeps following that window if you move it
AreaA rectangle you drag out
DeviceA connected iPhone or iPad, or the iOS Simulator

Pick Window and Screenify highlights whichever window is under your pointer. Move the pointer to the window you want and press Space to start recording it immediately.

3. Record

A short countdown plays, then recording begins.

To stop, press Esc — it works from anywhere, so you don't have to find the HUD first. You can also click the stop button on the HUD, or use the menu bar icon.

Screenify then opens your recording in the editor.

4. Look around the editor

Three areas:

  • Preview (centre) — what your exported video will look like. Not the raw capture: your recording is already sitting on a background, with rounded corners and a shadow.
  • Timeline (bottom) — one row per layer. Your recording is the top row; zoom, captions, music and effects each get their own row underneath.
  • Properties panel (right) — the controls for whatever you've selected. Click the background and you get background controls; click a zoom segment and you get zoom controls.

You don't have to change anything. The recording is already presentable as it is.

Two things worth trying immediately:

  • Background — swap the wallpaper, or drop the recording into a device mockup. See Mockups.
  • Zoom — Screenify can place zoom moves for you based on where you clicked and typed, so the viewer's eye follows your cursor. See Zoom.

5. Export

Click Export in the top-right corner. You choose:

FormatUse it for
MP4The default. Anywhere video goes.
GIFShort loops for chat, issues, docs
WebPSame as GIF, smaller file
Shareable linkUploads and hands you a URL — no file to send

Pick a resolution, click export, and Screenify writes the file. On Apple Silicon this runs on the graphics chip, so a two-minute recording usually finishes in well under a minute.
