Multi-window recording
Capture two or three app windows side by side in a single video.
Some demos need two things on screen at once: an editor and a browser, an app and a terminal, a form and the database row it writes. Recording the whole desktop to get both means capturing everything else too.
Multi-window recording captures only the windows you pick, arranged in a layout, as one video.
Start it
From the welcome screen, click Record multiple windows next to Start Recording, or open the HUD and switch to multi-window there.
You then pick a layout, then fill it.
Layouts
| Layout | Windows |
|---|---|
| Side by side | 2, left and right |
| Stacked | 2, top and bottom |
| Main + sidebar | 2, one large and one narrow |
| Row of 3 | 3 across |
| Grid 2 + 1 | 3, two on one side |
| Picture-in-pic | 2, one inset over the other |
| Keep current positions | Records the windows exactly where they already are |
Fill the layout
Each slot highlights in turn. Move the pointer over the window you want in that slot and press Space. Repeat for each slot, then press Enter to start recording.
Screenify moves and resizes the real windows into the layout for you, and puts them back where they were when you stop.
If you'd rather it didn't touch your windows, turn the auto-arrange toggle off — Screenify then records them wherever they already sit.
Adjust the split
Between the two windows in Side by side, Stacked and Main + sidebar there is a divider you can drag before recording, to give one window more room. It snaps to halves, thirds and quarters.
In the editor
The result is a single recording, so everything works the way it does for any other capture — background, zoom, captions, export.
One extra control: the gap between the windows shows your background through it, and each window gets its own rounded corners and shadow.
Windows with transparent corners — the iOS Simulator is the common one — are handled: the transparent region is keyed out so your background shows through instead of black.
Limits worth knowing
- Two or three windows. Not more.
- Windows must be on the same display.
- Each window is captured as-is. You can't zoom into one window independently of the other; zoom applies to the composed frame.
Where to go next
- Screen, window and area
- Mockups — put the composed frame inside a device or browser
