Screen, window and area
The four capture sources, what each one is good for, and the permissions they need.
Click Start Recording on the welcome screen and the recording HUD appears with four sources.
Fullscreen
Captures an entire display. If you have more than one monitor, pick which.
Use it for anything where the viewer needs to see the whole desktop — window management, drag-and-drop between apps, system settings.
Window
Captures one application window.
Hover the pointer over a window and Screenify highlights it. Press Space to start recording that window straight away.
The recording follows the window: move it and the capture moves with it, so the frame stays clean even if you drag the window mid-recording.
Resizing a window during recording is not recommended. The video dimensions are fixed when recording starts, so a resize leaves black bars.
Area
Drag out a rectangle and Screenify records only that.
Use it when the interesting part of the screen is small — a form, a settings row, a terminal pane. Cropping later throws away resolution; recording only the area keeps every pixel.
Device
Captures an iPhone or iPad connected by USB, or the iOS Simulator. See iPhone, iPad and Simulator.
Stopping
Press Esc. It works from any app, so you don't have to find the HUD first.
You can also click stop on the HUD, or use the Screenify icon in the menu bar.
Permissions
macOS gates screen capture and cursor tracking separately.
| Permission | Needed for | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Screen Recording | Any capture at all | System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording |
| Accessibility | Cursor position, click effects, auto-zoom | System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility |
Screenify asks for Screen Recording the first time you record. Without Accessibility it still records fine, but the recording carries no cursor data — cursor highlighting, click rings and automatic zoom have nothing to work from.
If you granted a permission and it still isn't taking effect, quit Screenify fully and reopen it. macOS applies these at launch.
Before you start a long recording
- Recording several parts? Add them to one project instead of making several. See Combining multiple recordings.
- Need notes on screen while you talk? Screenify has a teleprompter window that is excluded from the capture — open it from the … menu on the HUD.
- Need a countdown or a border? Both are in the same … menu.
