Step-by-step

In Screenify Studio, select Window Capture and pick the Canva window.
Hide the bookmarks bar (Cmd+Shift+B) and close other tabs — same browser privacy rules as any web app recording.

Open Canva in Chrome and navigate to the design you'll record. Close the template suggestion sidebar if it auto-opens — click X or click anywhere on the canvas to dismiss it.

Check the design name in the browser tab title: 'Canva - Q4 Campaign Secret Launch'. If it's confidential, rename the design to something generic before recording (click the name at the top of the editor).

Zoom the Canva canvas to a comfortable working level (Cmd+0 for fit-to-screen, Cmd+= to zoom in). Start zoomed out to show the full design, then zoom into specific elements as you explain them.

Start recording. When selecting elements on the canvas, click and PAUSE — Canva shows a blue selection box and property panel for the selected element. Give viewers 2 seconds to see what you selected before explaining the properties.

Pro tips

Auto-zoom on the property panel. When you select a text element in Canva, the top toolbar shows font name, size, color, spacing, and effects in a row of small controls. Auto-zoom catches your click on these controls and zooms in so viewers can see you changing 'Montserrat Bold' to 'Inter Medium' at size 24.

Cursor highlight across the large canvas. Canva designs can be large (poster, presentation, multi-page docs). Your cursor crosses large stretches of whitespace between elements — without highlight, viewers lose track of where you're pointing. Especially important when demonstrating alignment and spacing.

Use Page view for multi-page designs. If your Canva design has multiple pages (e.g., a social media carousel), zoom out to show all pages at once before recording. Click a specific page to zoom in. This gives viewers the overview-then-detail structure.

Record template customization, not creation. If your goal is to teach non-designers, record the process of customizing a Canva template — not building from a blank canvas. Most Canva users start from templates. Show them how to swap images, change text, adjust colors while staying within the template's layout constraints.

Common mistakes

Leaving the template sidebar open. Canva's left sidebar auto-opens to show templates, elements, or uploads. It takes up 25% of the screen and pushes the canvas to the right. Close it when not actively using it — click the X or click on the canvas.

Dragging elements across the canvas too fast. Canva's drag-and-drop has slight input lag on complex designs. If you drag fast, the element visually disconnects from your cursor for a moment, which looks like a glitch on video. Move elements slowly and deliberately.

Not showing the export step. Canva tutorials often end with the finished design but skip the export. Show Download > File Type (PNG, PDF, SVG) > Quality settings > Download. This is the step most viewers actually came for — getting the file onto their computer.

Recording with Canva's commenting/collaboration panel open. If you're on a Canva Teams plan, the collaboration panel shows team member names, avatars, and comments. These may contain internal feedback or personal names you don't want in a public recording.
