How to Record Shopify

Record Shopify admin without exposing revenue and customer data. Guide for store setup tutorials, theme customization, and app demonstration videos.

When you’d need to record Shopify

1

Store setup tutorials for new merchants

Record the full store setup process — adding products, configuring shipping rates, setting up payments, choosing a theme. New merchants follow along step by step instead of reading Shopify's 50-page docs.

2

Theme customization walkthroughs

Record how to customize a Shopify theme — header, footer, homepage sections, product pages. The theme editor has 100+ options nested in 20+ sections. Video shows exactly where each setting is.

3

App and integration demos

Record Shopify apps in action — install the app, configure it, show the result on the storefront. App developers use these for marketing. Merchants use these to evaluate apps before installing.

4

Order fulfillment process documentation

Record your fulfillment workflow — receiving orders, processing payments, printing labels, marking as shipped. Train new team members on your exact process.

Things to know

  • Shopify's admin dashboard shows real revenue numbers, order counts, and customer names — all sensitive merchant data
  • The store URL in the browser bar reveals your .myshopify.com domain, which identifies your store
  • Shopify's admin has nested settings panels (Settings > Shipping > Rates > Edit) that go 4 levels deep
  • Live order notifications pop up in the admin if you have the Shopify bell enabled

Step-by-step

  1. 1

In Screenify Studio, select Window Capture and pick the Shopify window.

1080p is sufficient — Shopify's admin is designed for standard screens.

  2. 2

Open Shopify admin in Chrome. Before recording, check your dashboard Home page — it shows total sales, order count, top products, and revenue graphs. If sharing publicly, navigate away from Home to a specific section (Products, Settings) before starting.

  3. 3

Check the browser URL bar — it shows your-store.myshopify.com. If you don't want your store identified, use custom area capture to exclude the address bar, or temporarily change the browser zoom to push the URL off-screen.

  4. 4

Disable order notifications: click the bell icon (top right) > turn off desktop notifications. Live orders popping up during a tutorial recording show customer names and order details.

  5. 5

Start recording. Shopify's admin has many nested settings. When navigating deep (Settings > Shipping > General > Edit rate), click each level slowly and wait for the panel to load. Rapid clicking through nested menus loses viewers.

For theme editing and app demonstrations

  1. 6

For theme editor recordings, open the Theme Editor (Online Store > Themes > Customize). The editor has a left panel with section options and a right panel with the live preview. Resize the panels so both are readable — the preview panel often gets squished.

  2. 7

When demonstrating Liquid code (theme code), open the code editor: Online Store > Themes > three-dot menu > Edit Code. Increase your browser zoom to 125% before navigating to the code editor — Shopify's code editor font is small by default.

  3. 8

For app demonstrations, show the install flow from the Shopify App Store, the app's settings page within Shopify admin, and the final result on the storefront. This 3-step structure (install → configure → result) is what viewers need.

Pro tips

Auto-zoom on Shopify's settings panels. Shopify's shipping rates, tax settings, and checkout configuration have dense forms with small input fields, dropdowns, and checkboxes. When you click a toggle or enter a shipping rate, auto-zoom zooms in so viewers can read 'Flat rate: $5.99 for orders under 1kg.'

Use a development store for public tutorials. Shopify Partners can create unlimited development stores with test data. Never record on your live store — revenue numbers, customer names, and order details are all visible. Create a dev store with demo products at partners.shopify.com.

Webcam overlay builds trust for merchant tutorials. Shopify merchants are often non-technical business owners learning e-commerce for the first time. A face on camera makes the tutorial feel like personal guidance rather than a faceless screencast.

Navigate nested settings slowly. Shopify Settings has 15+ categories, each with sub-sections, each with individual settings. Clicking through 4 levels in 2 seconds means viewers lose their place entirely. Click one level, pause, explain where you are, then click the next.

Common mistakes

Recording your live store dashboard. The Home page shows today's revenue ($12,847), total orders (143), conversion rate (2.1%), and top-selling products. This is sensitive business data. Start your recording on a specific page (Products, Settings), never the dashboard.

Exposing customer data in Orders. The Orders page shows customer names, email addresses, shipping addresses, and payment status. If you need to show the Orders section, use a development store with fake orders, or blur/crop the customer info column.

Recording in the code editor without increasing font size. Shopify's online code editor renders Liquid/HTML in ~12px font. After video compression, `{{ product.title | escape }}` becomes unreadable. Increase browser zoom to 125-150% before opening the code editor.

Not showing the storefront result. You spend 5 minutes configuring a setting in the admin, but never show what it looks like on the actual store. After every configuration change, switch to the storefront preview (Online Store > View) to show the result. Config without result is unsatisfying.
